SOUND AND COLOUR
Silence is de rigueur in museums, and yet the faithful of the fourteenth century gazed at paintings while hearing organ music or Gregorian chant; canvases by Caravaggio adorning the rooms of a palazzo could sometimes be contemplated to the sound of an aria by Monteverdi; and as for Vivaldi, Bach or Handel, their most beautiful concertos were composed in honour of cities such as Venice.
This exhibition aims to recreate the musical atmosphere that saw the genesis of a selection of fourteenth- to eighteenth-century paintings. Each piece has been chosen to harmonize with the period and subject of the painted work, lending it an additional dimension and perhaps allowing visitors to hear how its colours can create their own song...
